In April I had the opportunity to accompany Lore, Operations Manager of AMEXTRA A.C. to the region of Guerrero, in the city of Tlapa de Comonfort. The trip, apart from being interesting, was very inspiring, not only because I was able to meet the team again, but also because I was able to observe their work up close and share with them the dreams and challenges they have experienced in their fresh start in the Association.
It was a quick trip, but undoubtedly rich for the senses. It all started early in the morning taking the Mexican roads and highways, which are always a delight for any traveler, different landscapes, climates and scenery make this road an easy path to travel. It is worth mentioning that these natural beauties were accompanied with a very pleasant company and a tremendous playlist in the car.
Tlapa is a commercial city, which means that it is always on the move, and what a move it is! Its location in the middle of the mountainous area of the region, favors the buying and selling of products around “El Jale”, the local market creator of hundreds of peculiar stories.
Tlapa is also home to the AMEXTRA office, where we were able to spend time with the team and talk about projects, ideas and challenges they have faced in the mountain communities of Guerrero, where they provide accompaniment.
That afternoon, I drove through the unique streets of the city, first by car, where I doubted my driving experience, trusting that I had the skill required to drive a pickup truck in the rain on a street with a reasonable incline; apparently I did not. Had it not been for the good advice of a local, I probably would have opted to let myself be overcome by the mountain and not go up, but thanks to him and the 20 prayers Isa, Sonia and I made, we made it!
Walking the streets of Tlapa was also very exciting. Being able to observe a lot of art on the walls made me think about the beauty of authenticity and the touch that each artist can bring to their work anywhere in the world.
Continuing this cultural tour, I had the opportunity to visit the workshop of one of the most renowned local artists. But not before delighting us with some delicious tamalitos and guanábana water. Raul shared with us his workshop and his interesting works, works that undoubtedly took us to a moment of reflection and introspection through their colors, shapes and symbols. Undoubtedly a very interesting tour rich in talent and passion.
The last day of the trip was destined to visit the projects where AMEXTRA works, in the communities of the mountain of Guerrero… And ah! What a beautiful tour. We took a break for breakfast with a breathtaking view, where seeing yourself surrounded by mountains is overwhelming and without a doubt something very beautiful to observe.
In the community I was allowed to know first-hand, the achievements that the region has had and now the new team, in the programs of family gardens, education, health and nutrition and income generation. The team is very young and this youth is reflected in their work, you can see the patience, love and effort they have put into each of their projects and that made my trip even more powerful. Seeing the great community garden, the smiles and knowledge of the children and the security and confidence of the craftswomen was a very emotional moment for me and for that I am very grateful.
Without a doubt this trip greatly broadened my perspective and helped me feel Mexico in a different way, helped me connect with Mexico in a different way.
This trip fueled my curiosity to learn more about my culture, to meet more people who do not conform, who struggle and are creative in the face of challenges.
This trip enlivened my heart, inspired my soul and undoubtedly made me connect with the beating heart of the Guerrero´s mountain.
