The “Chenalitas” are dolls made by artisans from Nuevo Paraíso in Ocosingo, Chiapas; They, like the rest of the people in their community, were displaced from Chenalo, their place of origin. So they lived many years of lack and suffering; homeless, basic services or food. Therefore, for this new beginning, AMEXTRA, A.C. supported them from the beginning to rebuild this community through the accompaniment and development of the integral transformation.
One of the projects in support of women’s autonomy, entrepreneurship and empowerment is “Income Generation”, where they work with artisans to become professional, rescue and value their traditions and culture through their crafts; as well as, train them to market their products at a fair price and thereby contribute to their family and community economy.
The artisans of Nuevo Paraíso speak Tzotzil and Tzeltal, and their dolls called “Chenalitas” are traditional, as they represent women in their clothing from their homeland of Chenaló, Chiapas. The blouse is made with looms, which is then embroidered with three-strand threads and some metallic ones to give it greater visual appeal. They wear necklaces, either beads or stones, according to the taste of the artisans.
The skirt, better known by the name of Nagua, is made of a special curtain fabric that is very fresh, they are also embroidered to have a beautiful presentation; this is always black and they are held or tied with a loom belt around the waist. The baby in the arm means that the women always breastfeed, even if they are working; because they are enterprising women who fight for the well-being of their family.
The dolls show that artisans mothers are strong, loving and hard-working, who fight day by day against poverty and the crisis we are currently experiencing. Support Mexican crafts. Support the indigenous artisans of Chiapas. Buy a doll with a cause!
