Flourishing in the Mountain is a project that will benefit 250 indigenous children, adolescents and adults of the Ñuu Savi ethicity (mixteca) of La Montaña de Guerrero, one of the poorest regions in southern Mexico, to reduce educational backlog, access healthy and quality food, improve their nutrition, take care of the environment and generate income with the sale of handicrafts, to preserve their Mixteco legacy and have the opportunity to achieve their dreams.
Historically, the region of La Montaña de Guerrero has been home to Mexico´s most marginalized populations. In 2013, this backlog was added the devastation that Hurricanes Ingrid and Manuel caused in 69% of the state of Guerrero, leaving dozens of deaths in the municipalities of La Montaña, thousands of affected homes, collapsed road networks and a delay of approximately 20 years in social well-being. Since then, Amextra has worked in Metlatónoc and Cochoapa el Grande, communities where 99% of the people live in extreme poverty, to rebuild and help the flourishing of indigenous families.
With the comprehensive care program in La Montaña de Guerrero, accompaniment and training is provided in 4 intervention areas:
In addition, this project has a component of cultural preservation and gender equality, which pays particular attention to women and girls. We train families and provide inputs to strengthen food production and handicraft production. We also provide accompaniment for the marketing of their products at the regional, national and international level.
With this project, girls, boys and women (mainly) will learn to recognize the value in themselves and in their cultural legacy and will enhance the use of their skills. Through training and the formation of local leaders in education, food production and craftsmanship and marketing, the Mixteca families will appropriate the project and we will achieve irreversible changes (such as reducing violence, reducing educational backlog, increasing job opportunities) that will be transmitted to new generations and will set the foundations for a new stage of flourishing in Metlatónoc and Cochoapa el Grande.
