My dream is to be a chef!

What is your biggest dream? – I ask him – Flavio smiles. He is nervous, but when he looks at the camera he is serious and sure of his answer: “What I want is to be a chef”.

Flavio’s biggest obstacle to achieving this dream is to being able to study. Flavio is currently studying the alternative high school in his community; however, it is not for certain that he will be able to continue to study to become a chef.  This uncertainty comes, mainly, from the scarcity of his family´s income.

As a result of the collaboration between the AMEXTRA Community Center and Alternative High School # 127 of Lomas de San Isidro, La Paz, State of Mexico, Flavio was invited to participate in a productive project for the generation of income that will help him save money to study. He and other young students at the high school became interested in the project and, since August of this year, have been going to the Community Center in the morning to receive training for the salsa and jam project and, in the afternoon, attending school.

This aspiring chef is a smart, cheerful young man and a born leader. For him, belonging to the Collective “The Taste of Dreams” represents the beginning of the realization of his dreams and those of his friends. In fact, it was Flavio who proposed the name of the group, who adopted it immediately.

The ¨Taste of Dreams¨ is a project in which Flavio and six other young people seek to generate income through the production and local sale of salsas and jams. His passion to combine flavors of vegetables and fruits, create new recipes and try the art of cooking, led him to be part of this group. His commitment is sincere; he cooks, washes the dishes, packs the salsas and supports his friends by encouraging them and getting to know them better. The rest of the group members recognize his passion for cooking and trust his proposals.

Today, you can be part of this project. Although AMEXTRA has supported thework space, seed capital and sale of the first products, there is still a need for tools, cooking utensils and specialized training for these youth to improve their production, establish sales channels and generate sufficient income to allow them to fulfill their dreams.
